When you think granola, you probably automatically think of a bag full of oats that is high in sugar and/or sweetened with honey. Maybe a couple of nuts. Lacking in flavour and crunch.
This is the issue I faced when trying to find a breakfast that was quick for those busy mornings. I was looking for a breakfast that was low in sugar, gluten free, loaded with nutrients, and met my need for a low FODMAP breakfast. I couldn’t find a healthy granola that was more than just a bowl of oats, or a product that was loaded with what I refer to as fillers… puffed grains that have no flavour or texture.
Once I was diagnosed with fructose malabsorption, breakfast became difficult. It made sense to me why my daily bowl of oats didn’t agree with me. I spent many mornings trying to get through bowls of bland rice puffs and would end up skipping breakfast most mornings. Most breakfast cereals contained sneaky FODMAPS in the form of sweeteners, and given fructans really disagree with me, this eliminated a lot of the standard breakfast cereals.
I started to experiment with making my own granola. There were a couple of important elements for me. It had to be crunchy, low in sugar, gluten and dairy free. I started playing around with ingredients, throwing in all my favourite nuts and seeds… those that I knew I could tolerate and that were low FODMAP. I played around with a few recipes until I had my first blend, the Original. I was happy knowing that each ingredient I had included was low FODMAP and was a quality ingredient meaning that I was gaining nutritional benefit from my breakfast. The other thing I was absolutely stoked about, was the fact that it was crunchy and it really did taste amazing.
As the business has developed, I have grown my range to include Cranberry and Coconut, Grain free and the newly low FODMAP certified Fig & Walnut.
